Requirements

Which Macs are supported?

macOS 13 Ventura or later. Both Apple Silicon (M1 and later) and Intel are supported.

Do I need an external display?

No. That's the whole point of this app. Standard macOS clamshell mode and most other apps require an external display (or an external keyboard plus power), but StayAwake Clamshell lets you close the lid with nothing connected.

It still sleeps when I close the lid

1. Is the checkbox enabled?

On the "Start Keeping Awake…" screen, you must check "Don't sleep with the lid closed (admin required)". After starting, click the menu-bar icon and confirm you see:

✅ Won't sleep with the lid closed  … Good. Safe to close the lid.
⚠️ Will sleep if the lid is closed  … The checkbox is not enabled.

2. Is the helper installed?

An administrator password is required on first install. If you skipped it, run the .pkg again. You can check the state in Terminal:

pmset -g | grep SleepDisabled

It shows SleepDisabled 1 when active and 0 normally.

3. Has the trial ended?

After 7 days the lid-closed feature stops (idle-sleep prevention remains free). You can see the days remaining in the menu bar.

License

My key hasn't arrived

It's sent automatically within a few minutes of checkout. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder. If you still can't find it, resend it yourself from the resend form on the purchase page.

I lost my key

Enter the email you used at purchase in the resend form on the purchase page and it's resent automatically. No paperwork needed.

I got a new Mac. Do I need a reissue?

No. Just register the same license key on the new Mac. There's no device limit and no online activation.

It says "Invalid license key"

You may have copied only part of the key. Select the key in the email from the very beginning to the very end, copy it, and paste. The key contains exactly one period (.) in the middle.

Safety & how it works

Why is an administrator password required?

Lid-closed sleep behavior is a macOS system setting, and changing it requires root privileges. The app installs a small helper dedicated to this one task and calls it safely from the app.

Could sleep stay disabled and never come back?

No. It automatically restores the normal state in all of these cases:

If you ever want to restore it manually, run this in Terminal:

sudo pmset -a disablesleep 0

Do you collect any data?

No. The app makes no network connections at all. License verification happens entirely on your Mac (there is no activation server). See the Privacy Policy for details.

Uninstall

To remove the helper as well as the app, run this in Terminal:

sudo /Applications/StayAwakeClamshell.app/Contents/Resources/uninstall-helper.sh

It restores normal sleep settings, then removes the helper and its LaunchDaemon. After that, move the app itself to the Trash.

Difference from the App Store version

App Store version "StayAwake — Sleep Prevention" (¥500)
Idle-sleep prevention only. Due to App Store sandbox restrictions, it cannot do lid-closed sleep prevention.

StayAwake Clamshell (¥1,500, this product)
Supports lid-closed operation with no external display. Because it uses administrator privileges, it can't be distributed on the App Store and is sold directly only.

Still stuck?

This is an independently developed app, so individual email support is not provided. Please always confirm it works with the free 7-day trial before buying. Bug reports are welcome, but a reply is not guaranteed.
